Ecological activities at York Mills Collegiate Institute

Healthy and Caring School Communities 2010-2011

York Mills students are strong believers of out-reach and activism outside of our school and into the community. This is no different in the Environmental Council. Here are some ways we’ve been active in our community!

Beat the Peak
On November 11th, 2011, Toronto Hydro in collaboration with Summerhill visited York Mills for the Beat the Peak program. This was on the same day as Grade 10 Environmental Day. The Beat the Peak representatives spoke at the grade 10 assembly as well as to over 10 classes. They handed out over 400 pre-programmed powerbars to students and staff. These powerbars are programmed to switch on during off-peak hours in order to help save power and money! All related documents are listed below:

Canadian Tire Donation
As part of the 5 cents plastic bag program, the stores must invest the profits from the plastic bags towards environmental initiatives in their store or in their community. We are very fortunate to be one of the four high schools to benefit with a generous donation from Canadian Tire. The store donated $800 to four schools in the area to support green initiatives and activities. A copy of the donation letter can be found here.

Global Village Sale
Due to the positive reaction to last year’s Global Village sale, the Environmental Council decided to bring the popular group back once again for a Christmas sale. All the crafts and items sold are handmade and 100% fairtrade. All the profits raised will go towards helping third-world countries.

Partnership with Harrison Elementary School
This year, the YM Environmental Council partnered up with the kids at Harrison Elementary School for a mentorship opportunity. Environmental Council members and staff adviser Mr. Heffernan attended the bi-weekly Eco-Team meeting at Elementary School. Our first activity was the 20 Minute Clean-Up at the York Mills Arena where York Mills students paired up with Harrison students to help clean up the neighbour ravine.

30 Hour Famine
The 30 Hour Famine is hosted annually by the YMCA (York Mills Christian in Action). Students make a minimum pledge of $20 in order to participate in the event. Participants forgo food for 30 hours in order to raise money and awareness for the massive hunger in 3rd world countries such as Africa. The Environmental Council uses the data from 30 Hour Famine in order to promote waste-free lunches and mindful eat. Pictures of our 30 Hour Famine display case can be found in the gallery.
